  So I have a set of 18" wheels on my 91 turbo that I don't particularly like and rear tyres need to be replaced asap. So I was looking at my options:
For the sake of simplicity, I am assuming I'd buy KU39 tyres unless specified otherwise
1) Cheapest option is to suck it up, keep the 18" wheels and just replace the rear tyres ($250-300 tyres)
 
2) I bought a set of 17x7 +45 wheels (advanti racing medusa) a while back, but only after I bought them realized that wheel spacers are illegal and could void insurance in the event of a crash. So, I could either use them as is without any stagger or possibly buy a different pair for the rear: I found a pair that look very similar 17x7.5 +38 (Panther Vector) and it seems like it would fit alright. ($320 for the pair of wheels + ~$500 tyres)
 
3) I know someone that is selling a set of GTR/ GTST wheels but they are in 16" and finding matching tyres that size (205-45-16 & 225-45-16) are pretty tough (KU 31 is an option but it is a discontinuated tyre I believe, so not sure how much longer I'd be able to find these). ($??? not sure how much for the wheels yet and/or if they are matching in color, at least + ~$500 tyres)
 
4) Try to find a new set of 17" wheels in staggered form + new tyres and sell my old wheels ($700-1000 wheels + ~$500 tyres - whatever I can get for my old ones ~$300-500 (not sure on value tbh))
 
5) ??? Something I didn't thought of yet???

I'd go option 4 personally, sell off the other wheels you have and put the $$ towards a quality set of wheels with good tyres to match

Thanks, yeah, sadly I have been looking at gumtree/ ebay for a little while without much luck in finding a set that I like, that would fit an mr2 and that doesn't cost $1000+ (also, I am not sure how hard it is to sell some old wheels locally).
To be honest I haven't checked any local wheel/ tyre shops in the area. I might have a look this week-end.

A good second hand set of wheels can be had for under $1k if you're willing to wait for a set to ship from Japan.

I have just fitted 17x7 and 17x8 +45 enkei RP F1's. with 215/40/17 front 235/40/17 dunlop no rubs they don't get squirrels at high speeds good in dry ok in wet. Got wheels from tire rack in USA $1300aus dollars delivered to my door 3day delivery.  Look great too

Dodgee, that was $1300AUD for the wheels alone or wheels + tyres?
Good deal if for the full package, else it's quite a bit more than I am willing to spend.

option 5) Buy some used but good quality tyres for your current 18in rear wheels to get you going and sell the new 17in wheels you bought. With the money you get from your 17s continue saving for a few months and buy a nice set of used Japanese 17 or 18in wheels and tyres. Then sell your 18in with tyres on Ebay or something.

That was for wheels only tyres were another $780
