Ignoring the tuning issues that may or may not be there, with his questions about wastgate, i get the impression his gate is either too small, or not merged enough to control boost at the pressure he is running. No ecu safeguard in the world can prevent that. At the track, as temps get higher and higher, it will creep higher and higher until a safeguard cuts the motor.

The only way the tune could be 'dialled back' would be to reduce the rev limit, but it would only prolong the time until it cutted.

He needs to sort the gate issue first. Then he can hold steady boost. From there, fuel pressure needs to be increased, or larger injectors installed to leave a duty cycle margin in the injectors to allow for fuel compensations and trims to actually function correctly.

At the end of the day, you cannot tune out a mechanical issue, you can only mask it, or restrict the setup to minimise its occurance.

All good points MCT_MR2.
Rodney did mention at MTC that his wastegate was too small.

Anyway, let's stop talking about Rodney's car here thanks guys. If he still wants to discuss it, he can start his own thread :-)

Fine. When are you going to post some in car vids rob?

I gave a few vids to Jaemus after the drags last week, so I think he'll include them in one of the next episodes on his YouTube channel. I guess he'll mention it here when the time comes :-)

Understood, and I agree about having as many safeguards as possible.

However, if we take my car as an example, I have ID2000 injectors (2225cc/min) which reach about 60-65% duty cycle at max revs and full throttle. If we assume that Rodney's car is running the normal fuel pressure, then his injectors are capable of flowing roughly half as much as mine, but mine are using more than half of their duty cycle, which means that Rodney's injectors would definitely be maxed out if he runs 300+rwkw on E85.

In other words, if there were safe guards to protect his engine at 100% injector duty cycle, then he wouldn't get very far because he is guaranteed to hit 100% duty cycle very easily.

Because the wastegate if to small the tuner had to lower the midrange torque by opening the gate early and lowering the rpm as it was starting to lean out the injectors at 8500rpm which was producing 24psi with the gate fully open, That why I ask about the injectors. It's running max fuel pressure, I was trying to work out where to spend my money injectors or bigger waste gate. As I'm not trying to make more power, I'm wanting to a better track car. Hope this clears it up.

Rob - awesome, i look forward to it, and interested to see what method you take to try and beat your time at the drags, and you get plenty of trouble free driving under your belt with the car. Did your catch can hold up in the end?

Thanks, and I hope so too! The worn synchros are the biggest annoyance now lol.

Yeah, with the new drain back to the sump I didn't even think about the level in the can. Also, each time that I emptied the remaining oil from the can below the level of the drain to the sump, it looked pretty much the same as it would in the engine, so I felt comfortable enough with there being a drain to the sump. I'll continue doing oil changes a bit more often than normal and it'll be fine.

Yeah cool. It would be a bit of work now to try and run an external drain from the head to the sump.

If your ever in melbourne, hit me up and ill let you hear worn synchros in an e51. Its not pretty, especially running evo shift linkages, they have no give. I garantee youll feel better about your gearbox.

The episode with the footage from WSID is probably a couple of weeks away at this stage, but I can speak to my editor (me) and put a rush on it if you want. He won't like it but that's his problem haha
