Im not building one at the moment, but I have a 98+ 5SFE which could one day be one. 
I just had a thought cross my mind, just for a basic build, 3SGTE head on the 5SFE bottom, would the standard 3SGTE ecu run it? or a standalone needed?

if you change the displacement then I wouldn't run a standard ECU. I.e if you keep it at 2L, then I don't see why you can't use it.

Theres a guy in tas I think running this basic low boosted setup in an st162. Sure it runs it, afm will meter the extra air to a certain extent, but its not going to be ideal. I dont recommend it. 5s rods arent strong.

The ecu can run it, probably just not well. It'll probably start & move, but you'd be limiting the fun.
