Hi guys just thought id get some advise on a direction i have for building a turbo engine for my new sw20 that in doing up.
i have already bought previously a gen 2 turbo motor with out turbo. Engine apparently runs but it down comp in No.4 cylinder, i suspect broken ring land as it was a high boosted engine that is stock i was planning to use this motor for base for build
i then bought a ct26 hi flowed off a mate so i think it becomes a ct27 tuned for 19psi
then i was given a gen 2 turbo full loom
i have a gen 3 3sge engine in this mr2 the engine will go in at the moment.
What i was wondering with the intent of putting forged pistons and rods in the gen 2 motor i have with a balanced crank is putting the head from the gen 3 N/A motor onto the gen 2 because i was told they have better flow pattern, and use the N/a cams as they have bigger duration or lift than the turbo motor? im wanting to know if this will work or if im wasting my time with idea as im aiming for 280kw from the engine
i am a qualified diesel mechanic and i have rebuilt my other sw20 daily when i bought the car so i do have knowledge of the 3sge engine.
any tips in what parts and where to get them would be great also cheers Nathan

First things first, you mention that the car has a gen 3 3sge currently. What year is the car?
If you car has the gen 3 3sge factory fitted you will have a hard time getting it engineered with an older gen 2 3sgte. What I have seen on here over the years is that for an engine conversion to be engineered and legal, the replacement engine must be of the same age or newer than the body.
 
If you are aiming for 280RWKW the build will cost you at least $10k-20K. 10K if you do all the work yourself maybe. You will need to go aftermarket on most engine parts including turbo, cams, cam gears, ecu, fuel pump, injectors, fpr, decent intercooler setup, exhaust, rods, pistons, medium-large turbo, metal hg, clutch, all arp hardware the list goes on and on.

You could buy mine! All the work is done. It has done a few hours running. Im changing to v6. It's in the for sale section
But if you are keen on doing your one, just tick all the usual boxes with rods,piston,ACL bearings,studs throughout, new pumps, dynamic balance, fit a moroso sump if it's a gen 2. Gen 3 block is a better block than the gen 2.
Some decent valve seats will help with safety. The gen 3 shim under bucket is a better option than the shim over bucket. The gen 2 will not accept the same lift as the gen 3
If you use the gen2 block, relocate the oil filter as it's in a ridiculous location for boosting.
If you are looking for 280kw, you will need more than the basic cams and turbo. Its a lot of work and money to find that number.

If you already have a gen3 na, just build that with some forged pistons etc. Dont bother with anything gen2.

yeah i was thinking of building the gen 3 up and just selling the gen 2 but wasn't sure if it would cope with the power, i am chasing 280 flywheel hp not wheel as i still want street drivable,
i will be doing the work myself as i have done multiple engine builds in my time as a mechanic.
if the gen 2 is not worth my time i will do away with that engine completely.

The gen3 GE bottom end is for you intents and purposes just as strong as the gte. The only mod you'll need to do (other than the obv forged pistons) is either drill and tap the block for oil feed to the turbo or source it elsewhere, and fit the turbo sump for the drain or drill and weld a bung to suit -10 hose to your existing sump.

ok and what mods will i need to do the rest of the engine like the head and stuff?
will the flow through the ports be ok or do they need to be ground bigger, will the stock ignition do or will i have to up grade ?
and can the stock N/A crank handle the power? as it will be balanced as well ?

Cranks are the same as turbo.

Stock ignition is fine.

Ports are big enough, basic clean up job.

Std cams are only 250 duration. Prob want some 264s and some upgraded valves springs.

Fancy OS valves not necessary but nice.

Always balance when building.
