They did?

Weren't some JDM cars wired up that way?

Not sure. I thought the only way to get quad tails was to either modify a Gen3 harness by making a few loops, or by using the Gen2 harness which used dual filaments anyway for the Gen2 lights

Not entirely sure as I never looked into it much. Tried it once with my Gen3 Bathurst and threw in the towel after 30minutes of confusing eBay socket wiring..

Dual sockets:
For some reason Toyota changed the sockets on the later model tail lights so the early sockets can't normally be used on the later lights, but IIRC, the wiring color code is the same for both.

However they can be 'persuaded' to fit (with a Stanley knife), so that you can use the dual filament early sockets on the later lights, instead of trying to use crap Ebay stuff.
There should be a few early tail lights with sockets sitting around doing nothing.

10 points for effort Matt, well it gives it an interesting look but I am not sure the authorities will like it.

There was a good wright up on the forum on how to do this mod that may have helped you.

Before I did the quad tail light mod on my car I checked and found they should be legal, in Victoria anyway.

There wouldn't be a thing wrong with the quad light 'mod' - it was just that Matts' mod was only partially successful initially.

Brake lights come on, brake lights go off - pass.
Taillights work - pass.

Well this escalated haha. Few things in response:
1. Yes eBay sockets are crap and this was largely the cause of my problems however you can't wire the stock ones to fit as they only have two wires coming from them (unless of course you get Gen 3 loom but you wouldn't mod as thats quad already).
2. Yep there is a loom around that gives you the quads, I think gen2 and upwards JDM had it and Gen3 upwards from Aus had it. Fun fact, the Aus quads have all 4 as brake lights but only the two outers as tail lights.
It's much easier to just buy $10 worth of gear and do what other have done than chase a harness down though.
3. The Gen1 loom that I have did have dual filament sockets, used so the lights would go super bright under braking, but they didn't utilise the low brightness feature of a dual filament globe.
4. If you're doing the mod never use stock sockets as they only have 2 wires (earth and positive) so you won't be able to make the circuit without extensive hacking and modification. It's much easier to use the crappy sockets but get the wires worked out before you start the procedure and use a multimeter to check there is resistance in the wires.
5. Of course the quads are legal in all states and territories that the MR2 was sold in. Like Dudeman said its brake lights test and then tail lights test and both passes.

That would make them not quads??

Depends on your definition of quads :p They would be quad brake lights but not quad tail lights.

I think that would quality them as tris. Lol 😁 or half quads, so maybe twos?

Omg I need a coffee.

Is everyone here sure that Gen3 ADM vehicles had quads? My Australian-exclusive 1994 Bathurst didn't have quads.. I mean, there's even a thread on these very forums of which a previous owner had to mod the car just to get quads (see below)

And it can't be JDM ones that have quads, as my new (to me) 1994 GT-S Jap Import is set up only to have outer 2 as tails and inner 2 as brakes (same as my Bathurst)

Had a 94 Bathurst in the family since 94 n it's non quad on parks and can't remember on brakes but can check.
