Hi guys,

Hoping you can give me some help/insight. I pulled the intake off the turbo today and found that on the inside there is a light layer of oil covering the inside of the intake housing of the turbo. To my knowledge this shouldn't occur and the oil should only be confined to the CHRA to lubricate.

This turbo hasnt been used that much since it's rebuild. It had 8k on it before I installed it and since then I have put only 13k on it. The turbo is performing fine, im not loosing oil and I am not blowing smoke from the exhaust at all.

Is this normal or should I be worried?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It could be sucking in oil from the crankcase breather system? Maybe take off the catch can and confirm the hose to the sump is not blocked?
Other than that maybe try a small breather filter on the catch can exit and plug the port on the air intake piping? Then clean the turbo comp and confirm it's not coming back.

What ever it is, it could have contributed to the death of the old turbo.

Thanks Nick. I'll give it a go.

I have been having a on and off gurgling noise coming from around the turbo/dump pipe area when I shut of car after a long drive. So I assume this has something to do with it.

The gurgling noise is likely a bit of air in the cooling system. That would be my guess.

I'm actually going to try a small filter on the catch can myself. 3/4" / 18mm ID is the one that fits. I just bought a black one from this seller for $11.50aud shipped.

Are you running a blow off valve. Could be bad flutter causing oil spillage from within the turbo. If you look at the dirty oil pattern the the turbo speed would be quite slow to produce such an effect.  Looks to me as if the oil or what ever it is, is coming out from the turbo.

Thats what I thought too. But I have bled the system multiple times to no avail.
Thanks man; I will definitely give that a go if cleaning out the hoses etc doesnt work.

I am running a blow off valve and I do tend to get a little bit of flutter when under 4psi. Time for a new BOV possibly?

Agree with what mrskylighter said. Clean it and block the intake hose and see how it goes

dont think its BOV related..
are you running a catch can at all???
if so check and see if its got oil in it..
could just be blowby
if your BOV is recirculated then check to see if there oil coming from there (turbo oil seal can fail and oil can be back into the intake via the bov recirculating)
if theres oil in the intake then theres oil in your intercooler too most likely, so would be st to clean that as well..

I have the stock gen3 catch can.
Is it possible to open it up or is it a sealed unit?

It is sealed but you can see inside it easily once removed. I actually had mine off the other day to check it out.

Its just a fairly basic design with some plastic dividers in it.
