Hey guys, just today I realised that I hadn't cleaned my airfilter since I got the car! so i took everything apart and realised I had a K&N panel filter in there, all good. So i nip down the road to get some filter oil, but I decide to leave the filter off because it's only a couple of K's there and back. WOW! The induction sound is incredible!!! above 4k under load the sound is unbeatable!
 
So now the question is... Will a pod filter set up give me similar results? I'm thinking of getting an Apexi filter because it's un-oiled (needed in Victoria), but the problem is it's kinda short. I'm assuming a CAI type intake down to the original air intake entrance would be best, but then there's the added problem of having to have the filter in some sort of box, plus having to avoid water splashing up into it...
 
What have people done to legally get that amazing induction roar that is possible from the 3s-ge?

Find a spare filter cover and cut out the area in front of the face of the filter. That should give you enough sound. Incase you want to go back to stock you still have the original cover intact.

Pod filter will also give you a similar effect.
Take the resonator out from the airbox too if you still have it

What is the resonator? Plus I have two empty boxes attached to the intake hose after the filter. Much purpose to these, plus will plugging them off help?
 
Oh yeah, and will the drilling technique increase crap being brought in, extra hot air etc? I'm not after more power, I just want the same and no compromise in filtering.

Oh I had thought these were it, I just was confused with the wording "take the resonators out from the airbox" I thought there was something inside...

Best free mods ever! I'll make sure I check out the filter every couple of thousand K's now, but this is a very neat little trick to get the old 3sge sounding like a beast!

Oh yeah, one quick question guys... I'm considering removing the original intake piping to the stock airbox and switching it for one of those silicone pipes so I don't have to plug the two resonator holes, but I realised that right at the point of the throttle body there is a smaller tube coming off the intake piping. Is this an essential part of kit and would I need to allow for it if I replace the intake pipe?
 
Or is it just better to use the original piping and block off the pipe holes (but what with, I'm just using a balloon at the moment :D)?

Don't don't mess with your stock air box, without it filtering properly your motor will soon be toast.
The 2 resonators in the intake pipe before the air box are mainly for intake noise reduction. If you remove them plug the holes or it'll suck in dirt.

Yes you need that or you loose your idle speed control, as well as A/C idle up. 
 
With Pod filters the problem is they are hard to mount securely, and they tend to suck in hot air.
There is also an intake air temp sender mounted in the stock air box, you'd need to fit that too.
 
Toyota really made it had for people who want to change things, ha ha.

All I want to change is the pipe to the stock airbox. At the moment I have just clamped some cut up inner tube rubber from a wheelbarrow over the holes, but I would like something a little nicer than that. Does anyone make a pipe kit that will allow for the idle control tube? I guess I could weld something up myself from steel, but I don't do stainless so would have a problem there...

Best to keep the OEM intake pipe - less heat soak than metal.
