Now I've got 1992 mr2 with (1995) gen 3 engine and (suppose to be gen 3 ) LSD gearbox also . I'm not sure if installers are telling me the truth about the gearbox , if its really gen 3 or not. Anyway I've only driven it 2000ks since the replacement 2 years ago. Now the speedo gear does not work , it goes to max 40kph.
I went to Toyota about this and they say yes its the speedo gears that needs replacing ($120 import from japan).
I put my car in for them to install it but now they said they need to get another part to go with the speedo gear. They couldn't tell me what was the second part for ($500 ish). Strange I know......
So I find them hard to believe and need a second opinion about this who knows alot about MR2s and speedo gears.

Whats your opinion about this and get this fixed asap before rego inspection at the end of this November.

First off you need to find out whether the speed sensor it electronic or mechanical. They can be interchange so you could have either one on your car

I would say Toyota thought it was the plastic gear on the end of the speed sensor, but turned out that is the not the problem and want to replace the whole lot now for the $500. I know the electronic ones go bad but not sure about the mechanical ones

Here is a photo of a electronic one

Charliemr2 has a couple of speed sensors for sale if it turns out that is the problem

It is located at the red dot. The electronic one will have 3 small electric wires coming of it the mechanical on will a 1 solid cable.

If you can take one facing down from next to the distributor it would be better
