Hey guys,

I'm new to this forum but have spent a bit of time on rollaclub.com and Toymods. I bought this car back in December and fixed it up to be registered again in late January.
I have a 1973 KE20 Corolla that I restored and got registered late last year, even though I plan to tweak the suspension and power a bit more I had the thirst for something a bit quicker. Hence I started looking for an AW11.

I had been looking for another fun car to use for hills work and weekend motorsport for sometime. The idea was to get something that was almost ready to go and required very little work, as I still want to keep modding the KE20. Like every other young drift-boy wannabe in Melbourne I had been looking at R32s and 180s, but it became increasingly hard to find one that had not been thrashed or was a little dodgy! Also both of these cars were really not me..
After riding in an AW11 with and over-driven SC12 up at DECA, and driving a mates N/A one I was sold on the idea of an MR2.
A 1987 Toyota AW11 SC with an SC14 fitted popped up on Toymods, and I picked it up for the bargain price of $1,500 because the previous owner was desperate to get rid of it for some more shed space! When this one came up it wasn't really turn key as I'd planned, but who could say no at the price!

The good;
  • Factory SC with targa roof
  • Adjustable shocks
  • SC14

The bad
  • A little rust in the rear guard
  • Slipping clutch
  • Worn brake rotors and flogged pads
  • Dirty as all hell! -I think he must have sat doing doughies in a puddle or something, it was amazing the amount of crap we found under the car!
So far I have fitted a new Exedy HD Organic clutch, EBC red stuff pads all round, new rear rotors, repaired the rust, wet-vacced the carpet/seats, pressure washed/de-greased underneath.
In time I will upgrade a few things on the motor to squeeze some more power out, and also fit coilovers/wheels.

The current wheels are a nice style but are a horrible offset! 15x6.5 +47!
I am thinking I will go for 15x8 with some decent quality semis, and maybe a set of street wheel too. That should really improve the image of the car and take away from the body imperfections.

The other part of the story is I couldn't bring home another un-rego'd car or Mum and Dad would crack the ****s! So I managed to negotiate storing the MR2 at a friend of a friends place untill it is rego'd. He also has an AW11 with an SC14! The agreement was that I could store the car at his place if I helped part out another AW11 SC he had in the front yard. This has also meant I could salvage a few parts from that shell!

When I picked it up and took it to my mates place (all dirty)

Adjustable shocks, Tokico?

With the temporary stablemate (another Sc14 powered GZE)

Someone got this hot....

Quick cleanup of some rust in the rear 1/4 (my first attempt at 2 pack)

The car has now been registered since January and I had a blast up at a DECA day a few weeks back, seriously needs an alignment and some good tyres as I really struggled with front end grip!

Interesting for me to see the car from outside the drivers seat!

Good to see this went to a deserving owner! Back in it's heyday this car was one of the reasons I looked towards getting an AW11 myself. Previous owner is a friend of a friend.

Welcome to the 8E3 club :)

Thanks guys, the paint is a bit rough and it appears to have had a respray at some stage. I will be fixing up the imperfections in due course, but I am almost a little glad the paint is a bit shabby as it will mainly be a track hack.

Hey guys,

I lowered the car last week before our Haunted Hills day, and now it has a much firmer ride and handles a bit better with the help of some more camber and castor. I was surprised how much the kings brought the car down, it really accentuates the need for some wider/better offset wheels!

I managed to borrow some 16x7.5 +35 BBS wheels off a mate with better tyres for Sunday, and so that helped with grip a bit.

We had a dry morning on the track but then at lunchtime it rained so for the first half of the arvo we had a lot of wheelspin and not much else!
It was good to get more of a feel for the car and find out what needs tweaking. I had one hairy moment as shown in the vids but thankfully managed to save it somehow! lol
I'm keen to get some semi-slicks on the car and also adjustable bars and an LSD in the near future.
Might not go as extreme as this ;

Here are some videos from the mornings session; (not all the MR2 ones have been uploaded yet but I will do so tonight)

I think my rear RH CV might be on the way out so I'm gonna park it up until I have a chance to give the car a good work-over.

you will find the reasons for this are all one in the same. I know the guy who used to own this did alot of dirt/grass, non tarmac motorkhanas.

Those shocks and springs probably also would have taken a pounding.

but for the price you can't complain, I know when he got it he paid a few thousand for a respray.

good buy for the dosh though, at least it will return to its former glory of when he bought it :D

I'm not complaining mate, I knew what I was getting. No doubt the car had been neglected though..
