$1000 for a running car sounds like a good deal to me :D most old cars will need a little work. I don't know a lot about the aw11's myself so probably not much help but pictures would also help others.

1. $1000 isn't too bad, it really depends what the condition of the car is. If it is mechanically sound (no worn out motor, suspension or interior) you've picked up a nice little bargain. However if there is a lot of work to get it road it's less of a bargain. You can buy a road going AW11 from $2000 - $6000 these days with wildly varying qualities.

2. Silvertop / Blacktop generally refers to the 4AGE 20 Valve motors that are from the 94 - 99 Toyota Corollas (I myself have a Silvertop 20V in my AW11). These are a common swap from the older 4AGE 16 Valve motor that came with the AW11 due to their higher power output (and higher revving nature). There is also referencing at time of Redtop and Bluetop in relation to the rocker covers found on the 4AGE 16V motors, this signifies different generations of the motors (I cannot remember which is which sorry)

Thanks mate you have set my mind to ease the car had been sitting for 4 years so I took it straight to the mechanic for a service he said the car runs great and the only fault was a sway bar.

What's involved in the 20v swap?

20V swap requires custom coolant pipes, swapping of oil cooler adaptor (20V doesn't have one), different starter motor (mounts on intake side), wiring conversion to make the 20V loom wire up to the AW11 body and a couple of other things that escape my mind currently.

Bringlis,
welcome to both the Forum and MR2 ownership. No information about where you live but I hope that when you get the car on the road you can join the Club in Queensland on our Runs. It's a great way to meet people like Knightrous who know everything about these cars, plus there is a good support network if you have problems.
The Club is low on politics but high on getting the most out of these great machines, and you can see some examples of what the range of cars are, from completely original to completely modified.
Send me a PM if you are interested and keep an eye out for Run information on this Forum.
Regards,
Walter
