This is what I have now but EVO's could work better as it has no engine temps at all. I dont need to conceal the IC due to application, so it can be out in the open. The thought was for a heat exchanger under the scoop but from what Im learning, its not enough.
Also had a thought of running the little vortex generators at the back of the cabin to help with airflow to the IC. Any thoughts?

when I was researching options I found that w2a is superior to a2a in all conditions except for circuit racing, due to the constant and good velocity airflow with a2a on the circuit. I might be missing something (or just tired) but I thought either option would heatsoak at standstill, all else being equal if you keep an w2a pump running at standstill you are constantly circulating the water and therefore shedding heat more efficiently than a2a. once you are moving, the volume of water in a suitably sized w2a set up would cool pretty quickly.
 
I think Steve with your car and intended use a2a would be the way to go, less weight and complexity. the pearl racecar owned/driven by Andy and worked on/driven by Travis has a2a and water injection and works great apparently.
 
I dunno if the vortex generators would help with the a2a all that much as the airflow is intended for downforce higher up on your rear wing, but I do think Evo65 is a good position being away from any heat source

Certainly going with the a2a now. Have been looking at the GTR IC. They are cheap and proven units. So the pearl runs the water injection? Is that pumped into the plenum chamber or onto the IC? Better do some research. Trav did say something about the water injection beging quite effective. Its just a matter of how much fluid is required then making a tank to suit.
 
The head will be back on Thursday but will not go in till the following week(Bathurst drinking weekend.We are working on Bushmills this time round. ).

I think the water enters between the IC and TB but Trav will confirm. The kits are about $300 I think

Just going off book-learnin' (Terry Heick's MR2 "Toyota MR2 Performance", which is a great read) you've got IC sprayers/misters (which spray water on the IC to cool it & combat heat-soak) and then water injection (puts water and/or methanol into the air charge, usually post IC, to supplement the intercooling, suppress detonation & and also steam clean the internals. Both pretty good ideas given the power you're looking to sustain. Both are recommended for a "stage 2" SW20 build in the book, there's about 5 pages on it.

Nice and easy to install in the MR2 boot.
 
I only used it for a short time until I installed the huge intercooler and sold it.
 
Quality was right up there and worked without issue once setup correctly.

The Pearl uses the basic kit above and was installed by Andy himself.
 
It works great and is a key to reliability for this car imo.
 
Our findings:-
- Added a fair bit more timing
- more reliable inlet temps (intercooler wiring taken out by a stray belt at winton last time meant we were slightly down on peak power with the fan not going but the car did not knock once running on pure water injection and no fan on the intercooler)
- Power increase at most rpm's
- Cheap cost (we use water, no meth)
- Used to reduce and keep temps stable NOT add fuel for the tune like alot of Americans use their systems for
- If system failed the car would not instantly die (alot to do with the above)
- No need for a fancy system when this cheap setup works so well
- Half a tank in 10-15 laps of Winton i would say is the amount used at a flat out rate
- ALL street MR2's should use this with a upgraded sidemount imo no matter what their setup
 
Your car Steve? you need a bigger intercooler no matter what but water injection makes sense for these cars. Over the years there has been alot of debate about what the best intercooler setup for a MR2 is, in a race car i think you have alot more REALISTIC options than a street car. I would run a ducted boot/rear mount A2A with a cheap water injection setup for your car.
 
Lighter than a w2a setup and would work just as well.

Nozzle is half way between the intercooler and the throttle body. You do not want it too close to the throttle itself.

You said it used half a container of water but how big was the container?

steve thats easy, the container is roughly twice the volume of water in it!
