Went to Wakefield Park over the weekend for the Wakefield 300.
Was a great weekend away even though my car was unable to run due to the clutch slipping again. I found out what the problem is, so will be removed again in the near future. Turns out the clutch is set for a lower spec that my car. It has been a pain, but once sorted it really will be a huge improvement.

Sill managed to run three sessions on the Friday to see if the handling and the new diff have improved the performance of the car. The result was a big yes. It felt far better than the last run at EC for time WTAC and back to back from my last run at Wakefield, it was chalk and cheese. Shame I couldnt get the power down due to the clutch but thats life.. If it doesn't see 66's I will be very suprised so it spent the weekend in around the back of the garage while I pit crewed for the RX7 V8 which ran in the W300.

The car is now logged with AASA as super TT and have my AASA National license so will be campaining a few races next year. May even see if I can run with the Toymods team at the Winton 6hr.

Has anyone walked Wakefield Park? Totally different perspective than driving..

Here are some pic's form the Friday/Saturday night

The kids love it! That was the best part of the weekend. The wonder combined with the terror on the kids faces. They thought it was actually going to talk and take off!

You make me want to build a track car so badly, the only condition is it would look need to look identical to yours. That blue and white colour scheme does it justice.

Your driving seems very fluent and smooth in your Oran Park video.

I think you would have dialled in the suspension just right, same thing as the brake bias from your other vid?

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated.

Oran Park was a pretty special day for me for a few reasons. The car was running standard brakes at that stage. The upgrade happened a few months later. May have something to do with decent bias..

After the run last Friday at Wakefield Park it really has moved forward with handling. Its far more planted than it ever has been. The 1.5 way is a BIG improvement. It has far more grip than before just a shame the clutch is still having teething issues.
Another problem is overheating. Sometning I really need to address.

Well the brake ducting and new master cylinder for the clutch arrived this week which will be fitted in the near future. Was going to tonight but could not be bothered..Next week looks like a better option.

Cheers

Wow.... I'm up to page 10 on this story and about $10'000 and several months into my own race-car build. I almost don't want to read on in case something awful happens!! Still, I'm feeling very inspired although slightly annoyed that it will be dark by the time i finish work and wont be able to go home and work on my own.

Hello Hypermania,

Great to hear there is another race spec car being built. If your interested in any short cut, hints and tips, please drop a line and happy to help out. Just dont spend any money in suspension linkage upgrades just yet! I have something in the pipeline.

I could have saved 100+ on the build and a few $1000 and made a better car, so pleased to help if required.
Surok is a great guy and enthusiastic to boot, who can also help out.

Merry xmas

Steve

Hello Bud,

Alignment setting do vary quite a bit from what I have gathered. Anything from +4mm up front to -8mm on the rear depending on your car, weight, camber, caster settings, track layout, etc.
I ran +1mm up front and -4mm on the rear last time out. The car felt really nice but its hard to say if the toe settings was the reason for this as I could really get into the drive due to slipping clutch but a good starting point.
Do you do your own alignments or do you use a shop?

I always use a shop - doing it at home just isn't accurate enough.
I think my last settings were 0 toe on the front and -6 on the rear. Camber was -2.5 on the front and -1.5 on the rear. Front caster was +8

Is this similar to yours? I found that running a lot of negative toe as well as negative camber on the rear will delaminate tyres. I did run with -1.5 camber on the rear a few times without issues though if you have any more you'll delaminate the tyre.

I'm still running standard calipers all round for the brakes though I have the Wolfkatz kit on the front now with Supra TT rotors. I haven't run on the track with them yet though I was having front lockup problems last time I had it out. Probably a combination of not enough weight on the front of the car as well as brake bias. I'm thinking that it will be better once I put a splitter on the front.

It's been so long since I've had the car out and I have lost my alignment sheets so kind of need to start again hence asking what you are running. I'm planning on entering in the 6 hour regularity race at Wakefield in 2011 and hopefully Superlap as well.

The 6hr looks like a good idea. You may be able to put together a team of MR2's. Im sure there are a few runners in Vic who will come up for the event. EVO65 may come along for some practice, I might be able to do it, just depends on the Wakefield 300 which has changed dates to July. If Surok can make it he will certainly be in for a run.

The toe settings sound about right but would run a mm or 2 out if it has trouble turning in. The camber is less than mine but chances are mine is over done!
The real way to find out is with a pyrometer while testing. Thats what Im lead to believe based on discussion with a few engineers.
I havent come across the delamination as yet but may depend on which tyres you use. Teams ran 3 degree in the 24hr at Bathurst as well as the 12hr and production car championship without these issues so it could be tyre choice.
As for alignments, its a pretty easy process to do on track and allows you to tune the settings while your there to perfect the setup with little down time. I dont know any team which does not use this approach.

With the brakes, you can always try using different brake compounds for front and rear to balance it out. More aggressive rear pad or upgrade to the RX7 rear kit.
Before any of these options, try adjusting your damping rate for the front and tyre pressures.

Seems like we should organise a track day as there are a few out there keen on having a run.
