I rescued a small 12v motor driving a door lock mech that had become slow after being exposed to moisture (poor, though good looking crash repair on the door that my son's mate had backed into..). It would start and then quickly slow as the shaft turned and heated up. After fruitlessly Looking for a replacement, for what looked like a common motor, I talked to the guys at
http://www.hobbyhabit.com.au/view/page/1.html, and it was suggested running it in some solvent. As suggested I used isopropyl alcohol with water and that cleared it, without starting a fire.. YMMV
