aawww thanks Rick.  But yeah 2000kms it just a little too far for you to come.

I am sure he could sort it out. The other option is to contact dept of fair trading to provide some muscle in having someone else fix his mistakes

Talked to the mechanic face to face on the way home.  He still hadn't called his supplier because he hadn't located his paperwork yet.
He doesn't want to do the job.  He wants his supplier to provide the replacement alternator & then pass the job on to someone else & is hoping his supplier will cover the labour.
Basically he didn't check whether anything was making it trip & doesn't want to.
Spoke to an Auto Electrician & he said he may be interested depending on the brand because there are 2 brands that he won't touch.
He has never seen the need for a hoist & always just uses stands, etc.

NRMA checked the battery this morning & said is all good. 

Mine looked good too when tested though must have had an intermittent bad cell that would short out and kill the alternator. I went through 3 alternators in my mr2 before I replaced the battery

Hhhmmm maybe I'll change the battery at the same time just to be sure.
 

I had a 1990 N/A and my alternators were dying all the time! Turned out to be water damage due to the stupid placement of the drain hole in the NA engine lid, it drips straight on to the alternator!! This causes corrosion so they fail faster than they should.

There are two easy options to protect your new alternator from the elements. You can put a shield over the top of it like I did, the black piece of plastic under the hose in the centre of the pic is covering the alternator, the second pic shows the hole in the engine lid which is directly above it!
 


 
Or you can get a turbo engine lid as the hole is in a different position as you can see below the alternator is nice and protected :)

 
The turbo engine lid is much lighter as its made of fibreglass and looks great too so if you have the money to spare its the best option IMO. If not the shield costs next to nothing which is why I did it, your mechanic should be more then happy to do it for you so he doesn't have to deal with it again!
