You'd hope its not the case, but this car is ticking a lot of the wrong boxes.
 
Do S.A. cars need to be inspected yearly to renew rego? 

Bring it to QLD. They'll register anything and look the other way.

In other news, that VIN is an early '93 one. Facelift cars started from around 87400 or so, from memory. My old one was 885xx.
 
Sounds like you may well have bought a dodgy pup.

yes it dose have the chassis number stamped in, and it matches, plan on taking to that area with some sandpaper in the next while to see if its got any weld marks or filler under there. also planning on pulling the carpet out to see what I can find under there
 
also how could you tell the plate was from a T-top? because that would be pretty definative
 
the car was bought off of a friend of a friend who has owned it for years in sa, and moved to sydney a bit over a year ago, then moved it to sydney a few months after that and would have been oblivious to all of this
 
not too worried, bought it so cheap that i could recoup about 80% from selling the rims alone
 
fully aware of what re-birthing is, but this seems like it still stands a chance of being legit, (plz don't crush my hopes just yet)

which when looked up matches perfectly with the car sitting in the driveway, and was originally sold in japan
 
shame the previous owner wasn't the slightest bit dodgy... just a bit clueless...
 
also if anyone wants a jdm shell for building a track car let me know before I start trying to source a rolling shell...
 
(so yes, just driving a poorly running automatic mr2 home was enough to get me hooked)

If you wanted my advice i'd suggest to put that chassis number through REVS and see what you get, that or explain your situation at your local police station and they can look those numbers up for you.
 
You have bought the car as a legitimate purchase, as far as you thought anyway so you won't get done for goods in custody or anything like that.
 
 
If the car hasn't been stolen and is just a grey import that hasn't had compliance or was for 'race only' its probably yours to do with what you want - except for getting it registered, I doubt that will ever happen now.
 
If it was/is a stolen car and not taken off the stolen vehicles register it's still a stolen car, you'll need to get that cleared up - you don't want to get someones else's $#!* under your fingernails for selling on a hot chassis. If it's still on the stolen vehicles register the police can provide you with some advice on how the car may still be able to be yours.
 
Like you say, if it was rebirthed years ago the original owner would have been paid out (thats if it was insured) and have forgotten the car. Otherwise the ownership trail can lead back to the grub to stole the car (if it ever was stolen) and they can be pinched.
 
Because car thieves are &*$^$ (*^%^ and they do not get visits from santa. 
 
Alternatively, ignore this advice and see how things pan out.

yeah, basically sums up what im planning on doing tomorrow, ring the rms technical department to see if there's any way it could be perfectly legitimate (on the very slim chance) then do as much checking as i can on the vin/chassis no.'s to see if either is stolen or written off... 
 
although that's not a bad idea to ring the police to get it checked for being stolen
 
and yeah, couldn't agree more, car thieves (and re-birth/body-er's) don't deserve anything from santa
 
also how would i find if it has side intrusion bars or not, and how do i tell the difference between 93- brakes and 93+ brakes
