Hey everyone! I'm in the process of buying a really nice Black MR2 Bathurst edition (just hit 200,000 KMs!) Now this is going to be a project car and probably not a daily. I want to keep it in really good condition, it comes with the full service history but what should I look to be replacing on it. I've heard the clutches and the the timing belts both need to be replaced after 100,000 kms. So that is two things?

Also seperate note, I'm paying $5000 for it. Do you think this is a good price? It's been treated well but needs new back tires and also registration, I'll attach some photos now.

Thanks guys for all the help, I know I'll be visiting here frequently.

Hi Ben,
That doesn't look like a 1999 Bathurst. It has the wrong wing, front lights, steering wheel and instrument cluster.
Otherwise it looks pretty good for the price.
They tend to be pretty reliable if they've had regular services.
Timing belt & a full service would be recommended.

Have fun with your new toy.

Welcome! and be warned, these cars are addictive.

Check the cars build date, that rear wing isn't from a 1999 car. Timing belts get replaced on milage or age, clutches only get replaced when they fail.

$5000 seems like a fair price if its a fair car. Check it for collision history, they don't like crashes. That steering wheel seems a bit out of place to me, as far as I know all of the later (94 onwards) came with airbags, that wheel doesn't have one. I could be wrong, it happens. But double check for front end damage.

Those wheels and 'tyres' won't be dam spec, check the running size and stagger to see what the old heads here think. (You can only get 'tires' in usa....)

Welcome aboard, theres nothing like an mr2.... (well there is, if they are Italian they are 99% rusted out and dead or are German - lovely cars but whaay out of my price range!)

Rikkir is right on the cluster, I didn't spot that. Front fogs were an option to have/not to on all bathursts, a few points to suggest its not a 1999.

Thanks so much for the replies, maybe it isn't a 1999? I'll talk to the owner they have a couple of them so they may have got confused. I've also heard that the bushings need to be changed? Or should I not be concerned. It seems in great condition overall

Like any second hand car of considerable age - mechanical checks :) mechanical checks :) engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes, tyres.

I don’t think many mr2 owners will know there exact kms of their vehicle 20+ years on, many different owners. Most Mr2 are well beyond what the cluster says as they are so so simple to wind back. So back to mechanical checks being the focus.

Seen Mr2s sell for $3k that needed $15k work to be safe and driveable, and others sell for $10k and needed no work ...

Enjoy the drive,

I was actually referring to the front indicator lights, I believe they are clear on the later models..

Also, I've heard that their is 3 different engines. Does the Bathurst edition run the 3S-GE/BEAMS motor? I'm sorry for all the noob questions. I'm loving the advice from the wise ones hah
