Recently purchased my JDM 1990 SW20 3SGTE and it is equipped with a sunroof. Problem is I'm not sure if its legit or not. I was hoping someone could shed some light on the topic for me. Here are some pictures:





 
I should mention I don't know where the fuse for this is as its not in: Kick panel, Frunk or Engine Bay. Also I have no pull across sunshade (open to suggestions on how to make one). The manufacturer of the glass is 'Sekurit' who also do the windscreen for my partners Mazda3 so I thought they may have done a deal with Toyota. The other details on the glass say: Saint-Gobain, 43 R - 005013, DOT 39 AS3 M448, 9.

I'd say it's aftermarket. AFAIK Japan didn't get sunroof models, they had t-tops or hardtops. I think sunroofs were a UK (possibly US) option only. Toyota moves in mysterious ways, Japan had t-top and hardtop options, UK had t-top or sunroof options, and Australia was t-top only. No idea what the yanks had to choose from. 
 
Post some pictures of the hinges. The UK ones weren't powered, it was hand operated to pop up at the rear or be removed totally. Obviously no pull across option for a shade unless you want a retractable scroll type jobbie, the UK ones were a hard card type the same as the t-top shades. The one in your pics stands very proud of the rest of the roof, the UK sunroofs sit flush. 

That's definitely aftermarket. My jdm import had one in it and it looked very much the same. Had mine removed since it robbed me if head room.

I'd have to agree with everyone else, it's more than likely aftermarket. I don't think Toyota would willingly allow it to protrude like that from factory

Thanks for the info guys, if anything it makes the car more rare XD. It's currently broken so I guess making it work won't require OEM genuine parts. I'll have to speak to a sparky to diagnose and fix the issue. My biggest issue was that I couldn't see Toyota producing a sunroof without a sunshade the car gets so hot in the sun.
 
It doesn't rob me of headroom, if anything it gives me more. I'm not a fan of cars with too much headroom. I jump in a modern Mazda and feel like I'm driving a tall block of flats haha. 

I wouldn't say having it sit proud is any disadvantage. I know many Toyota cars with a similar and worse sitting sunroof. 

Sorry to hijack the thread but my SW20 has a factory sunroof, I didn't know that I could get a card to block out the sun.  Anyone got any ideas where I might be able to find one?  Cheers.

All good the thread had pretty much finished anyway. I tried for a while to find a pre-cut piece to block out the sun but was out of luck. What I did was cut a normal windscreen protector to size then used some suction caps to keep it in place. Works extremely effectively. Would reccomend. 

In sadder news I have found out that along with not working my sunroof also leaks :(.

I'd be trying UK ebay or a UK mr2 site to find one.

Cheers for the tip Matt, i was thinking of getting some laser cut sheet metal and attaching some cloth to it somehow, your idea's much simpler :) - Also the stock sunroof has drainage down the a pillars that comes out somewhere in the front wheel arches, i don't know how you'd go trying to rig that up for an aftermarket one though.
 
Thanks Dudeman, i had a quick look on ebay, but i think i'll have to do some digging to find a stock one.  it would be pretty sweet though.

Thats all good. I was going to do a similar task and line some thin wood with fabric like the roof but when it comes down to it the reflective material is going to be the best at reflecting the heat coming into the car. Depending on where the leak is I'm either going to have to create a drainage channel or sikaflex the leak if I can.
