Today was ARDC private practice at Sydney Motorsport Park which was a great excuse to get the SW20CS (Clubman spec) for a run. I haven't driven SMP for a few years due to work and not having a car available but this year will be the year to make up for lost time.
The track and facilities are brilliant. WP is a fun little track but SMP simply blows it away. There are a few spots on the track which are bumpy but the grip made up for the few bumps.
Weather conditions were perfect being overcast all day long, 25 degrees, no rain.
There was a huge variation of cars from GT3 race cars to Civics. The L2S class was great as there were about 15 cars in our group so there was a huge amount of track space for everyone.
The goal was a 1.55 lap time. I ran a 1:48 in the race car in 2011 so it was a fair enough goal. The SW20CS has basic power at around 150rwkw(still..)and has a overheating issue when driven hard at the track. This causes the ECU to retard the power output so it has 120kw (there abouts..)but before it drops into 'safe mode' it is a ton of fun when it rev's straight out to 6200rpm with ease.
The tyres are the RSRR which worked really well at SMP. They are better suited to SMP than WP. So a fair tyre to achieve a 1.55.
I was suffering some fault which effected timing in the first session which I fixed without it reoccurring for the rest of the day. The oil catch can that I fitted was a great help but cooling really is the bane of these cars.
Balance was fantastic, especially under heavy braking. The stock brakes with Willwood 600 brake fluid, matched with Red stuff pads worked well with this set up.
The car did not step out until the final session of the day when I had made a small change to the front of the car which was bringing the rear around in the hair pin(turn two), and turn 11 when I pushed a little too hard. Overall the balance was really good. Such a great little car.
The second session I managed a 1:59 which was ok but stilll a lot of work to do. Top speed was 181kph and 134kph into turn one.
After a chat with someone who knew the track very well and a study of my Racechrono, I figured out a few things then when out for a few more runs. Last session of the day saw a 1:55:55, top speed of 197.7, 147.7 at apex of turn one. Very pleased with the results and confident I can get the car down a few more seconds once the heat sink is sorted and a few other tweaks are done. This includes:
The new poly bush kit.
Rear bearings and ball joints.
Alignment and RC reset.
AVCR boost controller.
My old water injection kit.
1:50 is the goal for the GP track on 140 treadwear tyre(RSRR) with 150 rwkw.
