Things that vibrate/rattle

So I have a few vibrations and rattles coming from around the engine bay in my sw20. Ive managed to fix a few, but i need more ideas! Have you guys noticed any things in particular that vibrate or rattle in your Sw20's?

Just fishing for ideas.

Heat shields would be the most obvious culprits. Just throwing some more ideas out- exhaust could be touching something, any number of mounting points could be loose e.g. air box or any thing else that bolts or clips down.

Ill check out the exhaust on the weekend. I checked the heatshields before i put the motor in. and it was all tight. I dont have an exhaust heat shield because of the aftermarket headers. it seems to be coming from the gear linkages but there is no slop in the bushes, just in the arm but i dont know to fix that (ill get a photo of what i mean in a couple of days)

I had a very annoying and persistent rattle hiding somewhere in the rear of my car after putting in my BEAMS engine with TRD engine mounts. My mechanic spent forever trying to find it. Tightened absolutely everything. In the end it turned out that resonant vibrations were making my the top turns of my TRD springs rattle. We finally jacked the car up, put a couple of tiny piece of rubber hose between the top two windings of the springs and presto. The mystery was solved!

The  mounting brackets on aftermarket mufflers can sometimes foul on the side of the mounts on the body if they are not aligned properly.

Check the engine and boot lids for slack in catches.
The undershield on the engine lid (NA) on my car was also vibrating until I fixed it.

That's a common problem with  progressive type aftermarket springs on the rear.
Can also be fixed with spiral coil wrap (available from Whiteline) that can be wrapped around the top coils. It's available in different sizes and it can be fitted without having to take the springs off, you simply wind it on.

Im having a similar issue, but rather the front of my 91 SW20.

One rattle has been slowing becoming more noticable, coming from the passenger side; sounds like around the side mirror area?

And another, coming from the drivers side front wheel. Could that be due to swaybar endlinks which was mentioned above?
And if so, is it as easy as just re-tightening the endlinks?
    Any help would be appriceiated

I still haven't had a chance to do any work on the car, but the slop im talking about is on the gearbox end, where one of the gearbox cables connect. the whole thing moves up and down. (there are spacers there, its the whole arm that moves).

The noise is also much worse under deceleration it almost sounds like the brake rotor hitting something sheet metal. I checked if the brake dust shield was touching the rotor but it wasnt the case.... Its driving me mental, the car sounds like a bucket of nails in a tin can because of it in revs.

re spring rattle what kind of noise does this make? constant or just when you hit bumps?
I've got Eibach Pro Kit springs in mine and wondering if they're doing it...

The spring rattle sometimes only occurs on bumps.... sometimes it happens when the springs decompress as weight gets lifted from the car when travelling fast over bumps or crests... sometimes it happens at certain revs which cause a resonance... sometimes it moves around as loads change on individual shocks... and sometimes it gives the impression that it's travelling around the engine bay or from one side of the car to the other.

In other words, it can be very confusing and hard to pinpoint... as my mechanic discovered!

thanks mate - I have an annoying noises coming from the rear so I want to eliminate the springs.
well I just called my local whiteline dealer and they said they have both the large and small size wrap. I think the large fits 13-18mm diameter.
I'm presuming your TRDs would be similar to Eibach so did you get the small or large?
