SW20 SRS Airbag Steering Wheels
I'm interested in finding a better steering wheel for my '96 SW20R. It has the optional SRS airbag and I'd like to keep one fitted. So that probably means finding either a TRD steering wheel with an airbag, or possibly fitting a newer steering wheel from a ZZW30 - which is very similar to the TRD wheel anyway.
Has anybody else done a swap like this? I've noticed there are three different fittings in the TRD steering wheels (A/B/C) and think mine's a C, but I'm not certain. Any tips or pointers would be appreciated!

This steering wheel came out of my 1/2 cut. (97 Gen3 JDM) When it was removed, it had the same connections (ie i dont think a boss kit was required) I dont know if that is of any help though

Hey Darius. That's the kind of wheel I'm thinking about putting in, if I can find a nice clean one for a good price!
P.S. Have you still got that wheel?

Think its a 330mm or 350mm steering wheel, Sorry its since been sold.
Dunno if the local Toyota dealership would sell you one for your left testicle, but its always good to ask just for a laugh.
Other than that, i guess Yahoo Auctions is your best bet though i must admit i haven't seen one in my travels, DYLAN have you seen any?

I'd like to keep my left one for now! I've given up on TRD parts in Australia too. I enquired about getting the front & rear TRD strut braces a few weeks ago and almost had to call an ambulance when they told me the price. In the end, I ordered them from MVP Motorsports in Texas and still managed to save a few hundred dollars despite the fact they had to order them from Japan, ship them to the US and then on to me in Australia! MVP have quite a list of SW20 goodies and the sales guy Robert is really helpful. http://www.mvpmotorsports.com/merchant/mr2.shtml

Thanks for the offer dylmrt, but at that price, I think I'll have to wait and see if I can find a second-hand one from a wreck or forget it altogether :-)

Does anybody know whether an MR-S wheel like this one will fit onto an SW20 without modifications to the indicator return mechanism... or anything else important!? Thanks

You can get a Gen V SRS airbag wheel which is the red stitch one? looks very similar to that MR-S one.

Hey mister2, what year model is your 2? I've read somewhere that different years went from mechanical airbags to electric. I would assume the later models would be the electric. However I may be wrong. If you can shed some light on this area for me that would be great. I like the 3 spoke steering wheels more than the current 4 spoke I have.

Hey dylmrt. I've considered the putting in a Gen 5 SRS wheel, just prefer the shape of the centre SRS pad, bit, thing on MR-s/TRD ones, that's all. They're cheaper too, which is pretty good incentive for me at the moment! Might end up going with the Gen V though...
mr_mi6, my cars's a 1996 SW20R (Gen4). I assumed it to be an electric trigger for the bag, but I could be wrong on that? The four-spoke wheel's a bit ug isn't it! The three is the goods.
Let me know if you find out anything useful and I'll do the same.

Excuse my while I celebrate my new steering wheel! After an enormous amount of pfaffing about, I've finally managed to swap the 4-spoke wheel on my 96 Bathurst for a 3-spoke job... and it's SOoooo much nicer. Some of you will probably say, "So what's the big deal?", but as I went along, I discovered that to do the change-over in a non-SRS Bathurst like mine, you also have to swap the entire indicator switch assembly with one from an SRS equipped car, fit a late model mount for that whole assembly and get the right steering column surround to put around it. It took me three separate purchases to work all that out too! Anyway, now that it's done, I'm I happy chappy and my old 4-spoke wheel can finally become a doorstop. Yay!

The answer is yes and no. I had an airbag in my 4-spoke steering wheel, but none of the sensors or SRS activation relays... so it seems that even non-SRS equipped Bathurst's have an airbag and an SRS logo on the steering wheel, but that doesn't mean your car actually has SRS (which was only an option on Bathurst models up to '98 I think). The important question is whether you have a steering wheel with a brass ring to pick up the current for the horn, or a 'clockspring' spiral cable unit which feeds power to the horn via a plug-in connector. Here's a pic of the back of my old wheel with the brass ring so you can see the bit I'm talking about. If your wheel has got that brass ring, then the swap will take all the bits I mentioned. If you've got the clockspring/connector, it won't have that ring and should be a straight swap.
