Wow what an awesome bunch of replies thanks everyone :)

Senol - I look forward to seeing what sort of results you may be able to net.

I remember seeing a 5sfe in america making about 110kw atw with a port and polish, extractors and exhaust. That would be out of 2.2 litre.

I would think 95-100kw was more than capable with a mild Camshaft and

In Terry's writeup he mentioned that the stock ecu would manage to about 270 degree cams (without too much lift of course).

I am quite happy with the performance of the gen 2 3sge and while I could have bought the Turbo model I still have strong goals to see this through :)

The thing that will determine whether or not the stock ecu will run it or not is whether or not you have a steady vacum at idle for the ecu to read (hence the not too much lift part.)

Maybe contact Terry (he is around on the forum) and he might be able to advise you on what kind of lift you should be looking for, and also the lobe seperation angle to try and aim for.

This reminds me of when I was looking for which type of differential to purchase. I will never buy anything until I do enough research etc. You should do everything "once", so make sure it's what you want and it's right. You will probably do your mods before myself. But I like to plan/ask questions for future referance. It also saves money :)

Ultimately I'd love a 1mzfe conversion, but you can't really get away with that on green p's. (waits for being flamed for being a p-plater that wants more power) yeah.. I hate p-platers in general too.

IMHO i don't see how a gen2 will get up to gen3 power without at least some CAM's and a decent zuast. you need to stretch the power band to make more HP, the gen3 has 9.8mm lift on the intake cam and 252 duration along with 10.3CR and bigger intake ports and TB.

here's the beams dyno. as you can see there's not much goin on till you rev it.

Thats glen (w w Wayne Kerr) dyno, i remember that day he made that he then switched cams and went back to 150-160 rwkws lol. He used to call my friends workshop and ask questions as my friend builds alot of 3sge's for racing (gen2/3 and beams)

btw it's a blacktop in an old celica.

I didn't realise that the gen3 was that different to the gen2 motor. Does anyone have a link to in depth technical information for both motors? And I wouldn't bother trying to make as much power as a beams with a gen2. It would cost more than an entire conversion..

Well the difference in power between the Gen2 and Gen3 3SGE's I thought was mainly down to the intake manifold?

if that's the case then i feel sorry for the guy that was supplied the dyno sheet, as he paid alot of money to guy i think name is glenn and it was a redtop beams which was supposedly set up in an old celice for tuning purposes then supposedly sent back over here(wa) to be put back in the st184.

well no. the intake manifolds are different but so are the heads, CR, CAM's.

the gen3 NA heads are the same port design as the gen3 turbo heads. the gen2 ports are smaller than all other 3s heads. tho this doesn't mean they lack flow. they have a more down draught port compared to the gen3 port.
